February 26 Incident

  February 26 in 1936 was one of Japanese historical turning point. On this day, about 1,5oo troops of the Army led to assassinate several Cabinet politicians. Then the government have had tight security for the Imperial Palace area and shut out all the gateways.

This  is February 26 Incident. After all Japan tended to militarism.

　１９３６年２月２６日は日本史上において大きな転換となった事件が起きました。この日、約１５００名の軍隊が内閣閣僚の暗殺を企てました。事件を受けて政府は、皇居周辺地域を封鎖し最大レベルの警備体勢を敷きました。

これが２．２６事件です。この後日本は軍国主義へと向かっていったのでした。

  This day was also unforgettable day for Ji-chan. It was the first day of his job Carrier. Because of the road block he could not reach even the gateway of his office. Since it was his first day so he didn't have the ID or any certification documents. He had no idea what to do. But when he had a security search at the checkpoint, he could fond the solution!

He reached a key in his pocket. It was the key for his locker room and showed the name of the office. Yes, he could get into the gate and got to his office. This experience may be a strong impression for him and never forgettable. He tells this story whenever February comes.

　この日は爺ちゃんにとっても忘れられない日となりました。その日は彼の仕事初出勤の日。しかし道路などが閉鎖されていたため、職場近くさえも辿り着くことが出来ません。なにしろこの日が初日ですから、辞令も身分証明書もありません。どうして良いか思案に暮れてしまいました。しかし検問所でその解決策を見つけることとなったのです!

手をやったズボンのポケットにロッカーの鍵があり、それには職場の名前が記されていたのです。無事検問所を通過し、職場に着く事が出来ました。この体験はよほど強烈な印象だったようで、２月が来ると、今だにその話をすのです。

  By the way, one of the Cabinet member as the Finance Minister, Korekiyo Takahashi was assassinated by them. It occurred at his house in Akasaka.

His house is brought over from there to Koganei Park.

It opens to public and we can get into the house. There is a scar of the samurai sword on a pillar that remains those days matter. The volunteer tour guide may explain the details of those matter there.

　ところで、閣僚の一人で当時の大蔵大臣、高橋是清も彼等に暗殺されました。彼の自宅は赤坂にありましたが、現在は小金井公園に移築され、一般開放されています。柱に残る刀傷が事件当時の様子を物語っているようです。ここではボランティアの案内が詳細を説明してくれます。

Bento for who?

Ji-chan loves bento so much so we have  "depa-chika bento" sometime in a while. The first photo is Kikunoi's bento named "Higashi-yama". The second one is from Minokichi's bento named "shun-sai" limited product.

爺ちゃんはお弁当が大好きなので、我が家では時々デパ地下弁当を買います。最初の写真は菊の井のお弁当「東山」。２番目は美濃吉の「旬采弁当」季節限定版です。

Lately I found that even though the ones are available for dogs.
You may be surprised that the bento is for dog! I have learned about it from the media so I've wanted to get the one since then. Finally I made it.
ところで、最近犬用の弁当を発見しました。皆さんは、犬用のお弁当があるなんてきっとビックリでしょうね。私はマスコミ情報でこの事を知って以来、買いたいと思っていました。そしてついに手に入れたのです！

It’s All So Crystal Clear

As I have purchased a dozen of glasses from Villeroy and Boch, I signed up a follower of their blog.
Lately they uploaded an article, "It’s All So Crystal Clear" that tells about what I've had. I have felt a sense of closeness since then.

Tools for Defensive

We have very dry and cold winter in Tokyo area. We don't have any rain for over 25 days. It provides flu virus propagation. In fact, the flu is rampant among people everywhere by now.
So humidifiers are the necessary tools in our area. But it's not enough for virus protection. We may have some tools(or weapon?) against virus.
冬の東京は大変乾燥していて寒いのです。すでに２５日以上雨が降っていません。それがウイルスの増殖を引き起こします。事実、私の地域では現在インフルエンザが猛威をふるっている最中です。ですから加湿器は必要不可欠な道具なのです。しかしそれだけでは充分と言えないのです。やはりウイルスに対して何か道具（それとも武器？）が必要なのです。

Last season I got a new humidifier that came up with Plasuma Cluster function. I think it worked. In fact, my coworker has caught flu but I didn't. We worked in the same small room together so I was under such risky situation. But I didn't get any.
So I decided to get some more air purifier in this season to make it better.
昨シーズンにプラズマクラスター機能付きの加湿器を買いました。これがとても良く効いたのではないかと思います。実際、同僚がインフルエンザになりましたが私は大丈夫でした。かなり危ない環境にいたと言えるでしょうが、私達は狭い部屋で一緒に仕事をしていたのです。
そんな訳で今シーズンはさらに空気清浄機を買い足して、対策強化です。

Besides, I got another one for my car. It can be charged in my car and can fit in the cup holders. Lately I use them everyday for such flu protection. Can it shield me from the threat?
そしてさらにもう一つ、車用のを買いました。車内で充電できカップホルダーに収まります。最近はこれらを全て使っています。インフルエンザの脅威から守ってもらえるかしら?

手順

1 Get one fresh tomato, oiled artichoke, mozzarella cheese and basil sauce.

新鮮なトマト、オイル漬けのアーティチョークとモッツアレラチーズを用意します。　

2 Chopped them (tomato, artichoke and mozzarella cheese) as your favorite size.

これらを好みの大きさに切ります。

3 Add basil sauce and it's READY!!

バジルソースをかけてハイ出来上がり!!

Either beer or wine can be a great partner.

ビールやワインが良きパートナーになりますよ。

O-se-chi Dishes 2011

There was a big trouble of O-se-chi dishes that Groupon Japan have faced. Here is the site that shows the troubled contents. According to the media, there were big difference between the sample photos and what the customer has received. It supposed to be illegal under Japan law. Now this case has been under investigation.
ご承知のように、お節料理に関して、日本のグルーポンで大問題が発生しました。こちらのサイトに示されているように、見本と受け取った実物が大きく異なり、日本の法律に抵触するおそれがあるとして現在調査・取り調べ中なのは周知の通りです。

To me it seemed very fishy smelled. If the customer would have researched other stores, they could have known it though...
思うに、購入者の方々が事前にもっと他店もリサーチしていたら、怪しいことに気付いたのではと・・・
（被害にあった方にはお気の毒ではありますが、そもそも箱詰めですぐに食べられる状態のお節は、配達したとしても販売・配送拠点から数キロ以内が常識で、その他は受け取りが基本。大手老舗でも数量はせいぜい200個ぐらいですから。箱詰めで500個も全国発送なんてねぇ・・・）


Anyway I didn't have such trouble so I should say I'm lucky.
This season, we had sort of Italian (or French?) tasted O-se-chi dishes.

まあとにかく、幸いにも私は被害に遭わずにすみ、ラッキーと言えるのでしょうね。
今シーズンはイタリアン(それともフレンチ風?)のお節を注文しました。昨年のお節はこちらです。

Here are the one I got at the shop. Compare the photo above. Absolutely same as each other. And of course the lest of other two were the same. This is what it should be!
以下の写真が購入した実物です。上の写真と比較してください。全く同じでしょう? あとの2つもサイトの写真と全く同じでした。これが当然あるべき形ですよね! They were all delicious! And they went well with French champagne we've had!
いずれも美味で、シャンペンと共においしく完食いたしました。

Auntie Anne's Japan

One of my favorite shop, Auntie Ann's has opened in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. I used to go there at LA branch but it's too far by now. I'm so glad I can have the one here in Tokyo.
お気に入りの店Auntie Ann's(Japanese language only)の支店が東京、池袋にオープンしました。ロサンゼルスでよく行っていたのですが、事情があって行かれない今は、とても遠くなってしまいました。
でも東京に支店が出来て嬉しいです。

My recommendation is plain Pretzels and cream cheese. They are the best combinations!
But I don't know if it's available in Tokyo's one. Since there were long line of people and I gave up to get into the shop.
私のお薦めは、プレーンにクリームチーズの組み合わせ。これ、もう最高です！
ただ、東京のお店に有るかは不明です。何しろ長い行列が出来ていたのでお店にはいるのは諦めてしまいましたから。

Yep, Terry had Lamb at his Christmas dinner. Just grilled them in the oven and cooled down for about a day. I'm sure he enjoyed it.
はい、テリー君はクリスマスにラム肉(つまりヒツジですね)を食べました。オーブンで焼いたあと、約1日かけて冷ましたのです。とっても美味しかったようですよ。

More glasses

I bought some crystal glassware lately. I have been looking for such kind. Then I found them at the outlet store near Costco. I found them on their official USA website (click here) but could not find them at Japanese one. Anyway I could get what I wanted. Hoooray!
最近クリスタルガラス製品を買いました。こういう感じのをずっと探していたんです。そしたらコストコの近くのアウトレットショップで見つけました。このモデル、このメーカのアメリカのオフィシャルサイト（ここをクリック）には有るのに日本のサイトには載ってなかったのです。まあ、欲しかったのを見つけましたから良しとしましょう。やったぁ～～!

Smoked Duck with Orange Marmalade Sauce

レシピ その１
スモーク合鴨のオレンジマーマレードソース添え

It's quick and easy cooking. How do I make it? Here is the process. (I should not say "Recipe" though.)
とっても簡単。その作り方は？こちらがそのプロセス。(あえてレシピとは言いません。）

1 Got a small pack of smoked duck loaf at a grocery store.
1 食料品店でスモークされた合鴨肉のパックを購入。
2 Slice the meat loaf about 0.5 centimeters wide pieces.
2　厚さ約5ミリくらいのスライスにする。
3 Put the meat in the steam case and cover them with orange marmalade.
3　切った肉をスチームケースに入れ、その上にオレンジマーマレードを乗せる。4 Cook in a microwave oven for about 1 minute. (Depends on its power, it may need more time)
4　電子レンジで約1分加熱調理する。（レンジの出力によって時間を調整してください）
5 Served with Cheddar cheese. Very easy!
5　チェダーチーズを添えて完成。超簡単で～す!
It goes well with French wine I have had recently.
それはもう、最近飲んだフレンチワインと相性抜群ですわ。

My Sommelier, a Cool Guy!

Recently, I had many chances to have French wine since Bearjolais Nouveau released on the market. See the photo below. Four of them on the right were empty already but the left one yet.
So I'd like to enjoy the last one. Then I met a nice "sommelier."
このところボジョレーヌーボー解禁もあって、フランスワインを飲む日が多かったです。 右の４本は既に空き瓶ですが、左の１本はこれから。せっかくだから、美味しく飲めるよう、素敵な「ソムリエ」に出会いました。

Terry has been busy for watching "his bagel."
テリー君は大事な「ベーグル」を盗まれないように見張っていました。 This hairy guy is 1 years old. According to the owner, he is charged some extra when the dog has the hair cut!
この毛深い子は１歳です。オーナーによれば、ヘアカットの時追加料金を取られるそうです。

He is only 2 months old!
まだ２ヶ月の子も参加してたんです。Looking forward to see them again next year.
また来年会おうね。

I was planning to buy a ginger bread house at the web store but it was too late. It's sold out! Ah, I have to wait another year...

A Fine Autumn Day

I took this photo a couple of years ago. I tried to take a new one but couldn't make it. So I uploaded it instead. I may try to take a shot again sometime soon.

この写真は２～３年前に撮ったものです。新しく撮ろうと思ったのですが、なかなか出来なくて。代わりに、これをアップしました。近いうちに撮りに行ければと思ってます。

American cuisine Fiesta

As I had an on-line chat with my best friend, I told her that it was the time to be ready for fresh baked ones at my favorite bakery. I noticed her I would be heading to. She asked me to get some donuts for her.
"Hey, what do you want? Sugar glazed?", I asked.
"Chocolate one, of course!", she replied.
So I told her I might send some pics by email or so.
親友とオンラインチャットをしていた時に、お気に入りのパン屋さんでパンが焼き上がる時間になりました。彼女にそのことを告げ、出かけようとしたら、「私にもドーナツをね」とのリクエスト。
「何にする? シュガーグレイズ?」と、私。
「そりゃあもう、チョコレートよ！」 と彼女の返事。
後でメールで画像を送るわね～(何しろ相手は米国にいますから)とチャットを終えたのでした。

Too bad! Donuts were sold out. All of them! I took a photo of it from the ad instead. They have had American cuisine fiesta (but it's called America Fair).
The most funny part is their idea of American food. Everything is huge! Hamburger, hot dog, Pizza... They are all bigger than regular size of the shop.
Later, I saw the donuts. It is two times bigger than "Original glazed" of Krispy Kreme.
残念！ドーナッツは既に売り切れでした。
完売だ～! そこで代わりに広告から写真を撮りました。お店では丁度アメリカンフェァーをやってました。傑作なのは、何がアメリカンって、ハンバーガー、ホットドッグやピザなど全てデカイ! 店で販売している通常サイズよりずっと大きいんです。後になってドーナツを見ましたけれど、クリスピークリームのオリジナルグレーズの２倍はありました。

The photo on the right shows what I have had on that day. Regular size hamburger, maple toast, and fried potatoes. They didn't have what I wanted though. May be it caused from the Fiesta.
右の写真がこの日私が食べた物です。レギュラーサイズのハンバーガー、メープルトーストとフライドポテト。私の希望してたのは無かったのですけど、これもフェアーの影響でしょうかね。
