Emma （絵馬）

You may see this kind of plate, Emma, at a shrine. It's available year around though, I guess it gets the most in March. Why? Because it's time for the school entrance exam season.
People write their wishes and hang it there.
神社にはこのように絵馬を掲げるところがあります。これは１年中ありますが、３月に掲げられているのが特に多いように思います。多分受験の時期と重なるからだと思います。
この板に願い事を書いてこの場所に掲げます。

These are for women who are expecting babies. They wish healthy and safe childbirth. After all, they offer votive dipper with a hole on the bottom at the Shinto shrine.
Imagine the water leakage. It reminds us of feeding children with mother's milk.
こちらは、子供を授かった母親用。無事に生まれますようにと願い、生まれた後にお礼として底に穴の開いた柄杓を納めます。それは赤ちゃんにあげる母乳が出る様子を連想させますね。
